TENS for Endometriosis

TENS for Endometriosis

2 minute read

Overview

Endometriosis is a disorder that occurs when uterine lining-like tissue grows on the outside of the uterus. This tissue sheds and bleeds. behaving like it would inside the uterus but is instead located on the outside. This shed tissue has nowhere to go. This results in deep pelvic pain and more specifically, painful cramping during menstrual periods. Some of the causes of endometriosis are immune system disorders, surgical scar implantation, and retrograde menstruation- which occurs when blood containing endometrial cells flows back through the Fallopian tubes and into the pelvic cavity, rather than leaving the body. These cells stick to the pelvic walls and continue to grow, developing into the extra tissue that leads to endometriosis.

Some symptoms of endometriosis include excessive bleeding, infertility, fatigue, bloating, or nausea during menstrual periods. Fortunately, there are effective treatments available.

TENS and Endometriosis

Since TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) units target deep sources of pain, we studied the effects of this technology on relieving endometrial pain and result in a possible long term solution. Acupuncture has also been known to aid with the pain caused by endometriosis, and some TENS Units (like this one) use the same techniques acupuncture employs to encourage the body's natural pain relief mechanisms. In a 2015 study, 22 women with deep endometriosis underwent therapy with different kinds of TENS Units for an 8-week period. After this period, scientists found that there was "significant improvement for chronic pelvic pain, deep dyspareunia, and quality of life by the use of TENS."

If you are looking for a unit that has the additional acupuncture feature, we highly recommend the VPod (which also boasts 23 other functions). This wireless unit should be applied to the lower back and/or lower pelvis area for greater endometriosis pain relief. This drug free and non-invasive electrical stimulation alternative has 20 intensity settings, so you can fully customize your session and improve your quality of life in the long run.
