What is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis typically begins to occur during the growth spurt right before puberty, and most cases are mild with very few symptoms. However, severe cases of scoliosis can be disabling. It is most simply described as a curvature of the spine, C or S-shaped. The spine development is observed through x-rays throughout the adolescent's growth, and in rare cases a brace or surgery is necessary.
Some signs of scoliosis include:
Uneven shoulders or waist
One hip higher than the other
One side of the rib cage protruding more than the other
Other imbalances in base bone structure
Scoliosis doesn't just occur during adolescence. There's another form that begins in adulthood as a result of wear and tear in the disks that sit between the spinal joints. As this happens. the disks begin to tilt and lose height, resulting in the curve that would then be categorized as scoliosis.
Some of the first symptoms of scoliosis are back pain, weakness, and nerve numbness. While there is no cure for scoliosis yet, there are several ways to reduce symptoms.
