Muscle knots and general muscle tightness can occur from strain or overworking a muscle to the point of extreme pain or discomfort. This can be debilitating and greatly limit range of motion from several hours to weeks. Ice and Heat 

Combining cold therapy and heat can help release muscle knots by constricting the blood vessels (cold) and flushing them out by removing the cooling pad/ice for 10-15 minutes at a time.
